Budo Zen Martial Arts is the school of the spiritual foundation for martial arts emphasizing enlightenment for the student in the most direct means. Dojo Budo Zen's focus is to strengthen the body, mind and spirit through quality physical training, while cultivating courtesy, respect and humility. We are one of the few authentic traditional Japanese schools in Canada welcoming kids and adults of all ages and fitness levels to train with our qualified instructors. At Budo Zen Martial Arts every student benefits from karate. The classes start with courtesy and respect between teachers and students. The younger students learn coordination, self confidence, self defense, and how to resolve conflict without violence. The older students will learn to balance work life, family, fitness, and to reduce stress. Through our colored belt ranking system of earning belts, all students will discover the ability of setting achievable goals, and experience the benefits of following through. Budo Zen Martial Arts has powerful tools that create positive change for all students. These tools will follow the practitioners throughout their lives giving them the opportunity to excel academically with better study habits, and professionally by becoming more attentive in their work environment. When students begin training, age, gender, and current physical condition does not matter. Everyone begins with the basics, and naturally moves towards more advanced techniques. Every student works on their own speed. Training at Budo Zen is anything but boring; it is high energy, fat burning, stress reducing, and super charged workout.
Budo is a japanese term describing martial arts. Budō is a compound of the root Bu (war) and Do (way). Budo means "martial way" and refers to those martial disciplines whose ultimate goal is spiritual, ethical and/or moral self-improvement. Thus while budo diciplines were (technically) based on the previous warrior arts (bujitsu), they developed a new emphasis, one that separates the martial spirit and mind from an external focus on war and killing (and service to others) and redirects them inwardly towards self-improvement. The characters "Bu" and "Do" in budo are rich in meaning and have many secondary meanings. In earlier periods of Japanese history, however, budo had a different meaning. It was used to define the ethical and moral principles that motivate or guide the practice of bujitsu, the military way or doctrine. This military way later became known as bushido.

Zen is a way of training body, breath and mind to experience the oneness and interconnectness of life, and to develop wisdom and compassion. The core practice is zazen or zen meditation, which is body-mind merger with each moment of life, the practice of presence. Zen teachings were transmitted from India to China, and have spread throughout the world. Zen is first and foremost a practice. Although the core practice is zazen there are many other practices such as martial arts training and Japanese calligraphy.
